An overnight trip to Aosta is the perfect way to absorb the buzzing atmosphere of Italy, see Italian culture, taste delicious food, savour velvety red wine and shop along cobbled streets, so you come back to Verbier refreshed and well fed. The border of Italy is just an hour away from Verbier, over the Great St. Bernard pass, so it’s a no brainer to go to Aosta for a day or two. It’s so close you can even just go for dinner.
We have a number of contacts in the wine trade in Aosta and can arrange wine tasting experiences with established local producers, such as Ottin Vini, or if you prefer to savour more structured and mainstream wines like the great Tuscans or Piedmontese, we can organise for an epicurian evening pairing these wines with a gourmet dinner prepared by a top Italian chef.
Aosta is also home to some stunning castles and Roman ruins; the ancient town of walls, Augusta Praetoria Salassorum, are more or less preserved in their entirety, a complete arch dedicated to Augustus and there is also a stunning twenty two metre high facade of a Roman theatre which is still standing, with an incredible backdrop of blue sky and snow capped mountains, it really is an impressive site.
In the winter, this trip can be coupled with a day skiing in the resort of Pila, a total contrast to Verbier with kilometeres of perfectly groomed pistes to swoosh down, and a sprinkling of fun, local and rustic family-run restaurants serving warming lunches to dine on to your hearts content – Don’t forget to ask us where to find the roast Stinco before you go, it’s simply delicious and not to be missed.
Our little black book of contacts covers hotels, B&Bs, ski instructors, sommeliers and restaurants in both Aosta and Pila, and we can arrange everything for your trip including transport there and back with our VIP transfer taxi service.
